The World Health Organization defines stress as a state of worry or mental tension caused by a difficult situation. It is a natural human response that prompts us to address challenges and threats in our lives. People react/respond to stressful situations in different ways.

It is normal to face stressful situations in life.  In fact, stress affects everyone but at various degrees. The way each person responds to stress and thrive makes a big difference. This has impact in terms of the individual’s health and overall wellbeing. Everyday stressors include everything from the daily house chores, work demands, family responsibilities, health issues to paying bills.

It is important to note that a little bit of stress can be healthy but chronic stress, can negatively affect one’s mental health, physical well-being and ability to thrive. Some symptoms of stress are sleeplessness, digestion issues, headaches, unexplained mood swings, lack of concentration, anxiety and panic attacks. Sometimes it may be difficult to explain why two people are faced with exact challenging situation while one or two of the above symptoms may be experienced by one person, the second person may experience more. This depends on their stress levels. So, people need to understand themselves and find ways of managing stress in order to thrive.

Stress weakens the immune system and predisposes people to illnesses. For some people stress can cause over eating of junk foods, while for others it may cause loss of appetite. Stress can affect one’s mood negatively which, may impact on one’s close relationships.

People doing more than they can handle will eventually be less effective and unable to thrive. Research shows that people who work many hours under pressure, end up getting less work done per hour. It can also lead to feelings of depression and anxiety as well. Does this scare you? You don’t need to worry, there is a way out: stress can be managed in such a way that an individual can still thrive; living a productive, happy and wholesome life.

As simple as this may sound, relaxation is an antidote to stress. It is important to set a time of relaxation for yourself to refresh and increase productivity. Thrivers make out time to relax, refresh and be more focused.

It is important to set priorities, so make a list of tasks and prioritize your activities. Prioritize people and tasks that are important to you. As much as possible stick to your list. Let go of the less important things. Where you can get help, learn to delegate tasks.

Watch what you eat, by eating in moderation to benefit from healthy eating (Such as more of vegetables,  fruits, reduce processed foods and/or as your expert consultant may advice in your particular situation).

Be active get more exercises. You may register for swimming or in a gym. This helps to maintain your heart health and overall wellbeing. Do things you enjoy and read interesting books.

Sometimes pamper yourself and take a trip away from the hassle and bustle of a city to a serene, quiet and secure environment to renew yourself.

However, if the stress persists, you may need to get the advice of a physician.
